Regular meeting of the C.S.A. of ChicagoEditorial Note: The Christian Science Association of Chicago was a branch of the C.S.A in Boston, Massachusetts. held at the rooms of Mrs. Philbrick and Miss Beecher, Thurs. May 7th, at 4.30 P.M. 

Pres. Brown, having a very urgent call, was absent from the meeting. R. Sherman was chosen PresidentAs Written:Pres. pro tem. 10 members present out of 14.

Report of CommitteeAs Written:Com. on examination favorable. Moved and secondedAs Written:sec. we suspend rules, and admit the candidates for membership immediately. Mrs. Mary E. Willey and Mrs. Emma Locke, students of Dr. B. Sherman, and Mrs. O. W. Day, student of Mrs Noyes, were each unanimously elected by ballot, as members of the C.S.A. of ChicagoEditorial Note: The Christian Science Association of Chicago was a branch of the C.S.A in Boston, Massachusetts..

Report of CommitteeAs Written:Com. appointed to prepare article in answer to one of Apr. 2, in Interior; “That, since an article had been published in reply, and a retraction had been made which fully satisfied Mrs. Eddy, it was not considered necessary to write anything further in reply to the article of Apr 2. However, as another malicious article had appeared in Daily NewsEditorial Note: Chicago Daily News, ridiculing an article which had appeared in the TribuneEditorial Note: Possibly “Judges and Doctors disagree” in the April 25, 1885 issue of the Chicago Tribune. The article talked about some doctors who had been treating General Grant through mind influences and attributed his recovery to that. (which stated that Gen. Grant’sEditorial Note: Ulysses S. Grant improvement was due to metaphysical treatment,) and calling us “charlatans uneducated, unlettered, harmless people,” it was thought advisable to answer this article. The answer was written and presented to Daily NewsEditorial Note: Chicago Daily News for publication, but refused admission with no reason given. Two letters from Mrs. Eddy to Miss Brown and Miss Beecher read. Mrs. Eddy requests us to place Christian ScientistAs Written:C.S. on our cards & advertisements instead of metaphysician. Moved & secondedAs Written:sec. that we use only the title. Christian ScientistAs Written:C.S. carried unanimouslyAs Written:unan. The AssociationAs Written:Asso. considers this highly proper. Mrs. Noyes suggested that any of us write articles on Christian ScienceAs Written:C.S. for publication.

Mr. Wickersham reports two sisters, spinal affection, which he would like suggestions on. Sick since they were 9 yearsAs Written:yrs. old. when they had measles; being now about 36 yearsAs Written:yrs. old. Mrs. Noyes thinks one was taken first & the other took it from the first through sympathy.

Mrs. Willey reports her case. She was cured of a tumor on the eyelid, nervousness et ceteraAs Written:&c, in 9 monthsAs Written:mo. sick 8 yearsAs Written:yrs. coming on 20 yearsAs Written:yrs. cause delicate health, overwork, worry et ceteraAs Written:&c. Tumor was taken out once by surgeon - Christian ScienceAs Written:C.S. will do instead of a knife. Mrs. Sherman treated the case. Dr. S. sometimes.

Questions, Should Christian ScientistsAs Written:C.S.'s alternate in treating a patient? Husband & wife can. Christian ScientistsAs Written:C.S's in close sympathy can. B. Sherman remarked those most spiritual can help most.

Mrs. Willey thinks she wouldn’t have been cured if she hadn’t studied, as she did for herself what no one else could.

Reply, it is not absolutely necessary, but better, because, as B. Sherman remarked Christian ScientistsAs Written:C.S's can protect themselves from further sickness; & R. Sherman says, they are cured of that one difficulty but the liability to disease is not removed if not protected by Christian ScienceAs Written:C.S.

Mrs. Noyes has found it beneficial to treat oneself for the disease of the patient & thus do work which could be done in no other way & save calling for help. Treat every patient for mal. mes. Turn to mortal mind and deny its intelligence. Mrs. Philbrick suggests coming promptly at 4 o'clock, as the membersAs Written:mem. have been in the habit of coming in late with few exceptions, since the AssociationAs Written:Asso. organized.

Question of measures to meet rent. Moved & secondedAs Written:sec. quarterAs Written:qr. dues be raised sufficiently to meet running expenses, carried.

Davis (he is usher in the church) & saw that they had been possibly misrepresented as “immoral.” Then he lent them to different members of the congregation & they all saw that the booksEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy had been misrepresented. Mr. Ruth the Ass. sup. of the S.S. wouldn’t believe they were the same books. As he said “There was not an immoral sentence in the whole book”.
