Your valued favorEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. is rec’d with many thanks. Also the specimen copy of your valuable paper. In reply to your kind offerEditorial Note: Mary Baker Eddy probably offered to accept Gault into one of her upcoming classes at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College. There is no evidence that Gault ever studied with Eddy. I can but thank you – and say that it is simply impossible for me to go to you at present. We are very poor. Though we live – thank God – in a bright comfortable home, and can surround our children with good influences – still – we have it to pay for, and our three little boys to bring up, and educate. I have work before me for years. But I shall study and read -- and fit myself for work outside home – when the time shall arrive when my boys are grown and require less of Mother’s time and care. I want to own all your writings -- in time -- every word. How to manage it pecuniarily -- I can’t just see now. But my crooked paths have been made straightIsa 40:3 ¶The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Isa 40:4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: Isa 40:5 And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. Luke 3:4 As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Luke 3:5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; Luke 3:6 And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. for me – time after time – till I have complete faith that they forever will be – so long as I strive for that which is best. I can not find the price of your book “Science and health,” – nor see in your paper how many subscribers I must get -- in order to secure them. I have shown my copy to some of my friends and they have admired it, with me, and I hope to get subscribers. Mrs. Mary E. Haggart of Indianapolis, has been lecturing in this vicinity – and while she was here I talked with her – of Christ’s teachings and she was deeply interested in your paper and wished for your address, which I gave her. – But as she is “booked” for one hundred lectures this Winter, speaks every night – and is tired all day, it would not be at all surprising if she should neglect to write you – but you could not have an abler advocate – she will have such opportunity too to get names for your paper – as she has, as yet, given but fifteen of her lectures for this Winter. She will be at home during the holidays – and to address her at Indianapolis, Ind. would be sufficient, as she is so widely known. I shall have other lecturers here – two – during the Winter – also pastors of Universalist Congregations – and will surely do all in my power to make sale for your books and get names for your paper. I have known of you – and been most deeply interested in your glorious exercise of God-given gifts for some years – but they have been such very busy years to me – I never have written you before. But I am well acquainted with your husband’s brother who lives at East Troy – and who is married to the Sister – of one of our near neighbors – Mrs. As Written: Mrs Willard Porter – who has had an invalid daughter for years. – They have often told me of you – And I have wished you could be here. I enclose one dollarEditorial Note: $1.00 in 1883 is the equivalent of $26.69 in 2017. and please send me your pamphlet on “Christian Healing” and for the remaining 75 cts.Editorial Note: $.75 in 1883 is the equivalent of $20.02 in 2017. I want your paper – “Journal of Christian Science” – beginning with the 1st copy of Volume 1st if you have the back numbers. And I shall try hard -- to never miss having it for my regular visitor – so long as I live – or you publish. I wish you could instruct us how to fulfill all the other commands of Christ, viz, to “Prophesy” – “Have faith” – “Work miracles,” “see visions” – “discern spirits,” “Raise the dead.” – “The love of the people is waxed cold”Matt 24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. And “the heart of the people is waxed gross.”Matt 13:15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. -- Spiritual life is the need of the hour. I feel it -- and desire that my own gifts whatsoever they may be -- may become sufficiently developed for practical use. And I will not fear to use them -- I know of those who have wonderful gifts, but who are so fearful of being called “Mediums,” that they smother their light under a bushel.”Matt 5:14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Matt 5:15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Matt 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Mark 4:21 ¶And he said unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a bushel, or under a bed? and not to be set on a candlestick? Luke 11:33 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light. I shall be more grateful than I can ever tell, if you can send me a word – sometimes -- to direct my efforts. Hoping to hear -- and wishing you highest success in every way --
