“ 5 Healing the Sick

I need not tell you that this is merely read, I’ve tried to comprehend and think I do, then your sermons

I tell you all this that you may see just how much I am trying to learn. My Annie will be five yrs old next Apr 26 My Physician Miss Williams Worcester treated me for a raw sore thought to have been there since Annie was born on the mouth and neck of the womb and I could not hold my water caused by the pressure As Written: presure of parts on the bladder, was extremely costive in fact was always that. My lungs were lame across the upper past a sore place under my left arm and a belief of catarrh slight but annoying. At first I gained enough so I could work and sing but still in misery relieved not cured all this summer I’ve been at a standstill One day as I had to wait for my husband I went to my cousins Mrs Sophia E. Avery, she had a caller from Boston and was telling her about Christian ScienceAs Written:C.S. as she understood it, and that she was having her daughter Mrs Addie E Wait treated by Mrs Sarah H. Crosse C.S. at Hotel Garfield. the lady did not believe anything As Written: any thing of it, but it came to me that if I was to be cured at all this was my chance. I thought of it a day or two and went up to try to see a Mrs Leavitt C.S. as I understand it, that comes to visit a lame lady on Front St. I waited till nearly night Mrs Avery thought Mrs Flint could do as well so I went to her she is a very pleasant lady engaged apparently in a good work. She has helped me, through my faith and her prayers I believe I am cured of the old troubles and I have her paid My husband has had a congested liver more or less for 4 yrs and such dreadful prostrating headaches and had to be so careful what he eats As Written: eat now he can eat anything As Written: any thing and the swelling of liver is gone down, but his worry brings on the symptoms These according to your instructions I can throw off for him and last week he suffered from a soreness of one lung all night not even waking me and he looked and said he did not feel able to sit up but there was no grain for the animals after their breakfast and some groceries beside needed, he said if I would go for my father 2 miles distant who was to help fix a place for the hens that way he would try to go to Millbury 1 ¾ and see what he could do. I told him while I was going to S. for father I could give him a treatment I did the best I could, in my coming home he started for M. about 8 but went to Worcester instead and no pain after 10 not much of any after 9 ½ and stayed As Written: staid out all day and without any dinner did not get home ‘till after dark

Also headaches As Written: headacks in my children and helped a neuralgic As Written: neuralagic shoulder these are my successes now for my failures Oh! how we hate to own them this Aunt that is with us has varicose veins on one of her ankles is a sore caused by them it has troubled her at times ever since I can remember healed a while, sore again never without an itching sensation I have felt if this power in prayer was for me I should be permitted As Written: permited to heal or at least to make it better but I make no impression on it. She was 13 when her mother died my mother somewhere about 4 you can readily see how naturally mother always to the end of her days (9 yrs ago) always stood in fear of her. I cannot remember when I did not fear and dislike her more than love her, she was so to speak spurts of love if anything As Written: any thing is to be found out having an extraordinary As Written: extraordanary amount of the curious which information when obtained seems to vent itself in extra spite she is loving in that she will do anything As Written: any thing in her power except kind looks or words. I cannot tell you, to me the disagreeable expressions of her face she knows she torments me by them and succeeds since studying ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science I find she has less & less power over me I shall conquer it, but I would benefit her. I once took care of her through a genuine case of small-pox I would do it again I would gladly do anything As Written: any thing in my power. she and another ½ sister of mothers are my first thought. the command being “To build up against our own house” this is not the exact quotation but the meaning as I took it in. I’ve As Written: Ive read a good deal from these books when I though she was in her best moods and try to have her understand it I think she having been a nurse more or less for 30 yrs she sees into it by her patients and physicians more than I can still in some way it’s As Written: its not for her for her ankle is incurable and not anything As Written: any thing can make the veins go back and when some days it seems better says was always changeable As Written: changable well and ill and sometimes As Written: some times I am fearful she would not give thanks even if it should be well but I should have the consciousness of having done my duty. I need not say that she never confessed Christ before menMatt 10:32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. Matt 10:33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. Luke 12:8 Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: Luke 12:9 But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God. still I think she is a Universalist As Written: universalist truly, the principle As Written: principal seems to be in the flaws, she finds in those who do try to serve the Lord whom they love. and talking incessantly As Written: insesantly to herself aloud that all may hear She was never sick but twice Small pox and on erysipelas when on one of her legs years ago.

No one knows of my desire in this direction except my husband and aunt and still yesterday Mrs Avery unbeknown to me asked Mrs Leavitt to take me as one of her class and let me pray afterward she thinking I should make a good confessionI Tim 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. I Tim 6:13 I give thee charge in the sight of God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession; I Tim 6:14 That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: . I should not have been willing had I known it I want it but I want to earn it some way what is not worth working for is not worth having perhaps it’s As Written: its not best I should have it. another help I see, we have been having candidates about a yearAs Written:yr at my church (Congregational) and now the Society and Church give Rev Philander Thurston a [?] Unclear or illegible call he has accepted As Written: acepted he has now been with us several Sabbaths I have never exchanged any words with him except greeting but between you and I he preaches ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science Sermons, they help me & strengthen me much Last evening subject “God's As Written:Gods Goodness” was a power for Christian Science, he comes from Boston do you know him? if so I know you like him.

This is not a begging As Written: beging letter please do not take it so but that I shall yet be your pupil although perhaps a dull one is my hope, but this much I would like if you should know of anything As Written: any thing where by I might earn enough to do it or any way whereby As Written: where by I might accomplish the end to remember me. I like to place people or rather think where they are located, the farm where I live is on the northern line next Millbury marked E. Burnap a little to the east of the center Mrs Leavitt Lectures to her class commenced yesterday Ten in number so I heard last night I seldom write and hope you will kindly excuse all blunders and ignorance I thank you for your sermons I will try and have them do good.

I have not the shadow of a doubt but Christian Science is true if I fail to comprehend it the trouble is in myself As Written: my self

Lovingly yours
