June 6. 1886.
My only apology for addressing this letter to you is the fact that I have learned a little about "Christian Science" and desire to know more.
My sister, Mrs. W. G. Ewing of ChicagoEditorial Note: Chicago, Illinois, and who is a pupil of Miss Ellen Brown, gave me a copy of "Science and Health"Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy which I have read with much interest, but have failed thus far to practically grasp the idea.
When I was about 15 years of age, (I am now 23) being much depressed by a sense of sin and impelled by a strong desire to find a purer and nobler life, I studied the Bible diligently As Written: dilligently and found peace and comfort in believing in Jesus Christ
At that time I united with a Baptist Church, During the two following years I studied hard preparing to enter college and was entertaining some thought of entering the ministry: but my health not being very good was persuaded by my father to give up the idea of entering college for the time being, and I remained at home helping my father on his farm. Afterwards I was again thinking of resuming my studies, when my father's death occurring my presence seemed to be required at home
Lately I have again been led to think of the minist ry and in fact, left a position As Written: possition in Milwaukee WisconsinAs Written:Wis. with the idea of preparing myselfAs Written:my self for that work.
I have not been fully at rest in my mind however for some years- I have felt that either there was far more in religion than I had found or else I was deluding myself with a vain hope.
If you will inform me when your next class meets, if I can meet the requirements, I feel now that I would like to enter it: for if Christian Science is true it is the one thing to be desired,– The "pearl of great price"Matt 13:45 ¶Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a merchant man, seeking goodly pearls: Matt 13:46 Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it. Even now a very dear friend is sick, hopelessly the Doctors say, with [*]Gap: words.Reason: page rip. and I [*]Gap: words.Reason: page rip. aid her. Her sickness was induced by too severe study they say
She is condemned to die for earnestly endeavoring to prepare herself to meet the duties of life.
