Dear Mrs. Eddy.

Miss Dike and I have just had word by telegraph that our parentsEditorial Note: Robert Pearsall Smith and Hannah Whitall Smith are willing to let us have two hundred dollarsEditorial Note: $200.00 in 1885 is the equivalent of $5,303.26 in 2019. each, but cannot, without inconvenience which they are not willing to undergo, let us have more. Is there any possible way by which we could make arrangements to take your course in June- or part of it - for that? We are so very eager to study under you. Could we be allowed to pay you the fifty dollarsEditorial Note: $50.00 in 1885 is the equivalent of $1,325.81 in 2019. later when we could save it out of our personal allowances? We do not like to ask this of you. but I am afraid we cannot make the course otherwise - and we want so much to take it together! But of course if you decide that it would to establishing an unwise precedent among your pupils, we shall think your decision the wise one, in spite of our disappointment.

Faithfully yours
Mary Whitall Smith
