Hannah Whitall Smith (1832-1911) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and died in Iffley, Oxfordshire, England. She was an author and leader of the Holiness movement. Smith's book, The Christian's Secret of a Happy Life (1875), was a popular work among members of the Holiness movement and practitioners of Christian mysticism. Her daughter, art historian Mary Whitall Smith, became interested in Christian Science and met with Mary Baker Eddy to discuss enrolling at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College.
