I was pleased with the Journal for Dec. as there was some explanations of the Mind-CureEditorial Note: See “Christian Science vs. Mind Cure” on pages 159-160 of the December 1885 issue of The Christian Science Journal. See also Mary Baker Eddy’s answer to a question about Mind Cure on page 167 of the same issue.. I think that is what the Public need now is to have the difference between Christian Science and Mind-Cure explained not many perhaps will understand the difference but if it can be impressed upon them that there is a difference that is a great deal now– I do not think too much can be said upon that– The very great distinction between the two that in fact They are exactly oppositeAs Written:opposit. I make that a great point with my Students that they will be able to answer that question. if anyone asks them what is the difference between Christian Science and Mind-Cure for that is the rock upon which so many founder. possibly I may appreciate this more having been in that position myself for a time although ignorantly for I thought it was right, and it so hard for a new Student to always be able to judge unless there is great pains taken with them– That is where the work lies to separate Christian Science from this dominable Mind Cure in the eyes of the Public, Deeply realizing this I suggested in our last meeting of C.S.A.Editorial Note: The Chicago Christian Scientist Association was a branch of the Christian Scientist Association in Boston, Massachusetts. that we have an Article published in our Papers here stating the great difference and defining it as well as possible– and instead of having it come from one member have the Public understand that it comes from all of the members to give it weight– The world must understand that Christian ScienceAs Written:C.S. is not Mind-Cure

The self styled Prof. Swarts and wife are now at home and have been for several weeks. It looks as though his trips were not quite so pleasant and profitable or he would not be home five or six weeks– he is no doubt trying to make his Institute work but I don’t believe he can. if he has some decent ones among his DirectorsAs Written:Directers. He poisons the whole– to quote him "this thing needs Printers ink" he will be find that merit is more than blow or bluster– Swarts lives just over my Husbands store and for two or three weeks he and his wife have been running in there to buy things Swarts has been inquiring into his Business whether it was good or not. He told him it was fair but for the last few weeks Mr Noyes says there has been a great falling off in it and He told me last night that he never was so blue in his Life as he had been for a week past as his transient trade had nearly all dropped off and his regular customers wouldn'tAs Written:wouldnt pay him– I tell you this so that you will know how they are cutting up with us and my Business has fallen off greatly (I have been doing well all the Fall but I don’t fuss about that I have always had ups and downs I speak of this in connection with his. I did not know that Swarts was trading with him or that he was losing his trade until Saturday night– I want him to sell out and come into ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science and he will before long but I don't want him to be forever out of his Business. I have worked day and night on this question to uproot my faults and to to keep Evil thoughts from coming into my mind. and have hardly dared to go to sleep for the awful dreams that I would have of wild Beasts pursuing me and other equally as bad to make Evil seem real to me– perhaps part of it might be ChemicalEditorial Note: This is a reference to “chemicalization.” Chemicalization is a term Mary Baker Eddy used to refer to a temporary stirring up of symptoms or process of “fermentation” as errors of various types are being destroyed. for I was working as hard as possible against Evil all the time or in other words my sins– I am working against Sensuality— with all my might and the Belief that there is any Personal man or woman– or any good in that Belief or that then ever was to me – The middle of last August I found when my path lay it was like laying down my Life– or leaving my heart from my Bosom. but I chose the way of Truth. Now if I could only keep in that way it would be alright but but I have had relapses– your first article in the Journal this monthEditorial Note: See “Thou Hast Been Faithful Over a Few Things” by Mary Baker Eddy on pages 157-159 of the December 1885 issue of The Christian Science Journal. seemed to hit me when you spoke of uprooting the weeds and of their As Written: there reappearing– It seems to me that when they are uprooted with such great tribulation that they would be more likely to stay uprooted– It is the senses that I am fighting and Oh! if I could get rid of them once and forever I would be so glad now that I have made up my mind– I wish I could have come help on the destruction of Sensuality but I won’t As Written: wont tell anyone else where I stand in regard to that now but you– I know there is no good therefore no power in Personal sense now if I could always realize that I would be glad– I would like to be notified of the commencement of your next class in season and if possible Mr. Noyes will come– Mr D.D. Comstock of Lost Nation, Iowa has been back to me for more treatment and he said that Mr. Wood, did not receive any notice of the beginning of the Class I was glad for I want them, both to go together as Mr. Comstock is much interested and amply able to go being quite wealthy but you never would know it from his appearance– Mr Woods Sister and her Husband have also been taking treatment from me– Mrs Bell has come home much pleased with her instruction– Hoping to receive one As Written: on of your helpful letters when convenient
