My dear Mother -

I have been long intending to write you a few lines, to express my deep gratitude for the great privilege you gave me in entering the Class of the Metaphysical College last June– The teaching we received there was to me indeed a revelation, & I cannot say what comfort & peace it brought me, how it calmed my fears, & showed me the nothingness of animal magnetism. The first time Mr Kimball mentioned the word animal magnetism, it was in such a way as to give me an instantaneous recognition of its nothingness, such as I had never had before– For this alone the class was worth its weight in gold to me - It simply took a load off me= & when we came to the handling of error, all was made so plain, so clear, so reasonable, that I did see that it is possible for me to be a true Christian Scientist & to overcome evil with goodRom 12:21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good. . Then the teaching about Christ, the Spiritual Idea, was to me again a fresh revelation, & filled me with joy unspeakable– That class was like a glimpse of the Kingdom of Heaven, & I came away with a sense of riches, of heavenly treasure -

Every day I am learning better to understand this teaching, & to see more how to practice it, & how to prove the powerlessness of all the claims of evil.

I must tell you we have had such a wonderful demonstration of our Father'sEditorial Note: God love & care for us- I received a letter from a student of Mrs Ewing's, Mrs Shaw-Kennedy, offering to send me a cheque for £210 for the work of Christian Science in Scotland– She told me that Mrs Ewing had seen you lately, & that you had spoken to her about the advancement of the cause in Scotland; Mrs Ewing spoke of this to her student, & the result was this generous gift— It does seem to us a most wonderful answer to our prayers, & its value for us is doubled from the circumstances out of which it arose–

We do desire to be faithful & true workers in the vineyardMatt 20:1 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard. Matt 20:2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard. Matt 20:3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, Matt 20:4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way. Matt 20:5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. Matt 20:6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle? Matt 20:7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive. Matt 20:8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first. Matt 20:9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. Matt 20:10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny. Matt 20:11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house, Matt 20:12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day. Matt 20:13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Matt 20:14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. Matt 20:15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good? Matt 20:16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen. , and we know that God enables us to be so. We have so much love & unity in our dear Church, & we love the Services & get much help from them.
