Grace D. Shaw-Kennedy (b. Cummings) (1869-1939) was born in Pekin, Illinois, and died in New York, New York. Her father, Columbus R. Cummings, was mayor of Pekin before moving the family to Chicago, Illinois, and becoming a millionaire railroad tycoon during America's Gilded Age. Grace married Vernon H. P. Shaw-Kennedy in Chicago in 1889. What happened between them is uncertain, however she later married John G. Bergquist, a lawyer, in Washington, D.C., in November 1907. In 1905, she was considered the richest woman in Chicago. While living there, she was a student of Ruth B. Ewing, who was a student of Mary Baker Eddy's. In August 1907, she was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, New London, Connecticut. Based on the records available, we have found no further information concerning her involvement with Christian Science, although it seems as though she left the movement after her second marriage.
