My dear Student,

Your letterEditorial Note: See 506.56.034. just came and I am rejoiced that you see at last as I knew you would sometime that sin must be made as much nothing to us by getting rid of it in ourselves and meeting its attacks from others with the love that destroys hate and the Truth that destroys error You have said to me in your letter “they cannot make me hate you” watch and pray the Bible says lest we enter into temptationMatt 26:41 Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Mark 14:38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak. Now this does not mean to lay down our watch but to “be wise as serpents and harmless as doves”Matt 10:16 ¶Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. . Those were the directions that Jesus my teacher has given me and that I have given you and all my students But there are others than ChristiansAs Written:christians at work in this hour, as Jesus said when he told his students “I send you forth as lambs among wolvesLuke 10:3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Did he know best? Yes, he did and every year I learn more of his life and the great truth he uttered that I have reached and know from experience their utility. You will find my letters to you all point out the way in the direction of “peace on earth and good will to man,”Luke 2:8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. Luke 2:9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. Luke 2:10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. Luke 2:13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Luke 2:14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2:15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. Luke 2:16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. Luke 2:17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. Luke 2:18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. Luke 2:19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. Luke 2:20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. even as my life has proven this since it was the transparency through which Love reached you and others in a higher sense than ever before.

The tone of your letter has changed. You speak as if I was denying you what I gave others! I am not giving students now any percent on the students they may send me I am sending them patients (if they go to them) all the time. I do it for the causeEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science. as I have laid down all of earth for it. I supposed you did the same you seemed so interested to build up this great work.

Do you think I was exorbitant in my tuition to you? I discounted 1/3 the year I came to Boston from my tour SouthEditorial Note: This is a reference to a trip to Washington D.C. taken by Mary Baker Eddy and her husband, Asa Gilbert Eddy, in early 1882. I put 5000Editorial Note: $5,000.00 in 1882 is the equivalent of $131,372.65 in 2018. into this causeEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science. My beloved husband and I travelled. I taught and he healed three months at the most expensive rates to do good, and I never took one dollar for it all. I taught eleven charity students last Jan. Every class, I have one or more. I had thought of offering you 5 per cent on the students you should send because you were alone and I wanted to help you; that was why I wanted to know if I had written or named it to you. Mr. Frye could not think what it meant because I never had offered but one student any percent before, and that was years before he studied. Have you the least idea of what it has cost me every way to bring this scienceEditorial Note: Christian Science to you and all I will give you that percent; are all the students I teach of your sending to help you if you wish it

P.S. I am afraid in my usual hurry I did not make myself plain to you aboutAs Written:abut what I thought. I have had full confidence in you, whenever I have thought of you all has seemed right but a sense of someone As Written: some one away from you that was diming your true sense of me, which I knew would tend to hide the light that flows from me for all, unless they stand in their own light.
