Accession: A10039
Editorial Title: A Hymn of Progress
Author: Mary Baker Eddy
Scribe: Asa Gilbert Eddy
Date: 1882 - archivist estimate
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by Asa Gilbert Eddy (as scribe) on lined paper.
Archival Note: On January 21, 1882, Mary Baker Eddy and her husband, Asa Gilbert Eddy, left Massachusetts for a trip to Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, returning on April 4, 1882. On January 20, a meeting of members of the Church of Christ (Scientist) was held at which a letter of farewell and admonition by Eddy (L00001) was read to them. In addition, a poem by Eddy (L00002) was probably read at the same meeting. A10039 is an earlier draft of the same poem but is shorter than L00002 and differs from it in some ways. L00001 and L00002 are in Mary Baker Eddy’s handwriting and A10039 is in Asa Gilbert Eddy’s handwriting.

A Hymn of Progress

From the darkness of the night, Into morning's golden light, We are going on, With the aid of art and ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science, With no heed of hate's defiance, Truth and Right our sole reliance, We are going on, Till the hills and valleys ring With the watchword that we bring, With the chorus that we sing— Going on, going on.

With Love's battle flags unfurled, With hope's cause before the world, We are going on, Though the storm-clouds thunder o'er us, Though the path seems dark before us, Though the foeman strive to awe us, We are going on, For our MasterEditorial Note: Jesus Christ led the way, Fought the fight, and won the day! Follow, follow, all who may, Going on, going on.

Stand ye only back, who dare Not the cross of Christ to bearMatt 10:38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me is not worthy of me. Matt 10: Matt 16:24 ¶Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Matt 16: Mark 8:34 ¶And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. Mark 8: Luke 9:23 ¶And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. Luke 9: Luke 14:27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. ; We are going on; Triumph's star above us gleaming, Victory on our foreheads beaming, For fresh laurels hourly reaching, We are going on, To fulfill each hope and aim, Conquer Sickness, sin and shame, And each erring heart reclaim; Going on, going on.
