Your letter of the 24th AprilEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. ought to have been answered earlier.
But the change of terms for tuition to me does not help me in the least; Since the name Christian Scientist is unknown in this CityEditorial Note: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I think I am the only person here who has taken a course under your students. Hence it is almost impossible to interest anyone in the ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science. If I had a thorough course of instruction at the College I could do healing that would compel thousands to listen. I could spend my time among the sick here and soon earn enough to take myself out of the grip of poverty, where misfortune brought me last year.
I could not send you a pupil from here till the ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science has taken hold of the people more.
There is more sickness here, which is accessible As Written: accesable to Metaphysics As Written: Metyphysics than in any cityAs Written:cty in the country.
If I could do justice to the ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science I should have all the work I could do in two months, right here in Pastor Conwells’ Church.
He is more than half ScientistEditorial Note: Christian Scientist by nature and unconsciously does some healing among the poor in his parish.
I hate a beggar who won’t As Written: wont help himself, and I have come to have sympathy for those who are powerless to do the work they love to do.
Hence I am reluctant to give up the hope of gaining the knowledge and understanding you alone can impart. With the little I know, I am able to do some very good healing.
If you should allow me to join your class and trust to my success in bringing you some paying pupils in the future, It would meet all my present wants, and not always remain a charity: for I should pay the debt I am confident in the near future.
My brother ScientistEditorial Note: Christian Scientist Rev J. W. Winkley of RevereAs Written:Rever. MassachusettsAs Written:Mas. writes me of his joyful As Written: joyfull appreciation of your course As Written: cource of instruction. He will preach a better As Written: betterr gospel As Written: gospell now, and I hope I may be able to proclaim the goodnessAs Written:good ness in PhiladelphiaAs Written:Phila soon.
Is there any encouragement you can offer me now?
