Pardon the liberty I take in addressing you; I want to layAs Written:tolay before you my perplexities, & hope you will consider them worthy your attention for a few moments.

I am a native of Scotland; my Summers are spent there, my Winters in the city of LondonEditorial Note: London, England, where I am engaged largely in mission work among the East End poor. During last winter I had a letter from my Aunt Mrs Field who lives here, telling of her complete recovery to health after ten years sickness, through the aid of a Metaphysician in ChicagoEditorial Note: Chicago, Illinois.

After her recovery she took lessons herself, and urged me to come & visit her, learn the System of CureEditorial Note: Christian Science & thus increase my usefulness at homeAs Written:athome. I came without knowing anything more than that it was a mental cure, & under the persist of many of my incredulous English friends.

I haveAs Written:Ihave now been in JacksonEditorial Note: Jackson, Michigan a month, have made the Science of Mental CureEditorial Note: Christian Science a daily study, & my Aunt has faithfully instructed me. I have read your booksEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy & "Divine Law of Cure" by Evans & haveAs Written:&have made it my Endeavour to understand as fully as possible all my instructions. I am perfectly satisfied that this is founded on the Rock Christ JesusMatt 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I Cor 10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. Eph 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; , & am longing to impart some of my knowledge to manyAs Written:tomany spiritual Christians on the other side, who, after they can throw off the natural suspicion they hold toward all American discoveries, will receive it gladly -

I shallAs Written:Ishall be in MassachusettsAs Written:Mass. about a month hence, & hopeAs Written:&hope to beAs Written:tobe in your cityEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts. I should be so glad to know from you, if you would be willing to grantAs Written:togrant me an audience. I am anxious to learn if you have sent any Metaphysicians over to EnglandAs Written:toEngland; it would be a pleasure to think I was not the only Pioneer.

I feel now, that to returnAs Written:toreturn without seeing you, would be a great loss to me. I want every aid I can have to strengthen my courage in this noble causeEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science., & youAs Written:&you must know how I shallAs Written:Ishall be opposed on every hand at homeAs Written:athome.

Much as I should like to be your pupil, I find it is impossible as my present means are just sufficient to take me home again.

I feel confident however, that my instruction has been of the right sort, as my Aunt is highly Spiritual, & hasAs Written:&has had wonderful success in Jackson. In three cases where Physicians had pronounced recovery impossible, she restored to health the sufferers.

Should it seen best to you to favor As Written: favour me, I assure you I shallAs Written:Ishall do all in my power to spreadAs Written:tospread the Light in London where my acquaintance is extensive, chiefly among the Society of FriendsEditorial Note: The Religious Society of Friends, commonly known as the Quakers, is a Protestant Christian tradition originating in mid-17th century England..

Yours with great respect.
