My dear Mrs. Eddy,

I write on behalf of the Members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Edinburgh, to tell you of the laying of the CornerstoneAs Written:Corner Stone of our Church, which, as you have already heardEditorial Note: See V04218., took place this morning at 8 o'clock. This early hour was chosen so as to secure quiet, and permit of the presence of the Sunday School children by whom the CornerstoneAs Written:Corner Stone of New Hampshire granite and the casket with its precious contents - the Bible and your books- had been presented.

Our First Reader read the following verses from the Bible:-

I. Corinthians 3: 9-14I Cor 3:9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. I Cor 3:10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. I Cor 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. I Cor 3:12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; I Cor 3:13 Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. I Cor 3:14 If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. .

Ephesians 2: 19-22Eph 2:19 Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; Eph 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; Eph 2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: Eph 2:22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. .

Then we had silent Prayer followed by the audible repetition of Lord'sMatt 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Matt 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Matt 6:11 Give us this day our daily bread. Matt 6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Matt 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. prayerMatt 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Amen. , and after that the three letters you have sent this ChurchEditorial Note: See L07680, L07681, and L07682. were read out. They seemed even more beautiful and encouraging than before and brought you very near to us. The Stone was laid by the President and the scholar who has been longest in our Sunday School, and then we all repeated in unison the Scientific Statement of Being.

The birds sang and the sun shone out while the little ceremony took place, and we separated with a feeling of profound gratitude for all the good which Christian Science has brought into our lives, and a sincere desire to do better in the future than we have done in the past.

Inside, our church will take the form of a hall of moderate dimensions, well-litAs Written:well lit and airy, with no decoration but handsome wood panelling to a considerable height, and a platform with carved balustrade. The Sunday School rooms are underneath, but with good windows as the ground falls pretty rapidly away to the Water of LeithEditorial Note: The Water of Leith is the main river flowing through Edinburgh, Scotland.. Outside, the church will be simple and strong, but dignified, as befits our old historic town and the greatest Cause on earthEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science.

Yours lovingly and loyally,
E. M. Ramsay.
