Most Respected & beloved Teacher

Your good letter of the 20Editorial Note: This letter is not extant. - was duly receivedAs Written:recd.

I am glad to know that you approve of our action in regard to Ed. "Interior"Editorial Note: The Interior was a Presbyterian newspaper published in Chicago., and now having disposed of him, for the present at least, we turned our attention to the clergiman with whom I had the correspondence.

As he had taken no notice of a letter signed by the Pres. & Sect’y of the C.S.AEditorial Note: The Christian Science Association of Chicago was a branch of the C.S.A in Boston, Massachusetts. requesting him to withdraw the charge he made that your teachings advocate free love, Bro. R. Sherman and I called on him yesterday morning. He acknowledged having received the letter, but said he had not decided as to whether he would accede As Written: acceed to the request or not, as he still thought that the only construction that could be put upon the passage in question, He seemed disposed to talk a great deal, telling how he came to read the book Science and HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and kept on in a rambling discourse in which he mentioned the correspondence he had with me etc, till Bro, Sherman remarked "that we did not call for the purpose of discussions but having many witnesses to the purity of your life and teachings, we had called to ask" - here the Rev'd, exclaimed calling Bro - S - off in the middle of a Sentence, "I will make an offer, if she will write me a letter explaining the passage which I quoted, I will read her explanations to my congregation, I will not read a long letter, but her explanation of the selection which I quoted"

Now if you feel disposed As Written: dispossed to write to him, you may send the letter in my care and I will see that he gets it.

Hoping that a few more lessons may effectually silence the tongues As Written: toungs which utter malicious falsehoods As Written: falshoods I remain

Faithfully Thine
S. J. Avery

P. S. Mrs A. joins in love and best wishes to you,

S. J. A.
