William C. Gray (1830-1901) was born in Butler County, Ohio, and died in
Oak Park, Illinois. In 1851, he graduated from Farmers' College in Cincinnati, Ohio (now
known as the Ohio Military Institute), and then began studying law in the offices of
Ohio Supreme Court Judge, Josiah Scott. He only practiced law for a short time until he
embarked on a career in newspaper publication, founding the
Tiffin
(Ohio) Tribune in 1853. In 1871, he moved to Chicago after being appointed
            editor of the Presbyterian newspaper,
The Interior, a position
            he held until his passing.
