William C. Gray (1830-1901) was born in Butler County, Ohio, and died in Oak Park, Illinois. In 1851, he graduated from Farmers' College in Cincinnati, Ohio (now known as the Ohio Military Institute), and then began studying law in the offices of Ohio Supreme Court Judge, Josiah Scott. He only practiced law for a short time until he embarked on a career in newspaper publication, founding the Tiffin (Ohio) Tribune in 1853. In 1871, he moved to Chicago after being appointed editor of the Presbyterian newspaper, The Interior, a position he held until his passing.
