Dear Mrs Eddy

I received your letter some time ago, and have been waiting for something to write you before answering it.

It seems at this moment as if “patience had ceased to be a virtue”. I have waited for my husband to say the word when we should leave here, and start for somewhereAs Written:some where, the place I did not care, only some place where I could practice “Christian Science”, But I have been put off from time to time and now he is waiting for the result of the electionAs Written:election’sEditorial Note: This is likely a reference to the Nov. 4, 1884, U.S. presidential election. It was a close election with Grover Cleveland, a Democrat, defeating James Blaine, a Republican., as he says it would be hard for him to get a situation until all was settled. He is not willing to go back to Boston himself, and neither does he want me to go. I have no practice down here, I have tried, but the people turn away from me. “A prophet is not without honor save in his own country”.Matt 13:57 And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house. Mark 6:4 But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. Luke 4:24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. John 4:44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honour in his own country. Think it must be the case here. The cures I have accomplished through the understanding of “Science”Editorial Note: Christian Science thanks to you, have not been willing to testify to what has been done.

Mrs Smith has written me quite a number of letters, but they don’t comfort me, she says to go back to Boston and go to work. That I cannot do unless I separate from my husband.

If this is meant for a trial of patience for me, I am getting a good one. I long day and night – to have patients to work for.

The paper did me so much good to read it was glad to see part of your sermon. I miss hearing you preachAs Written:preech. I sometimes say to myself, “How long Oh Lord How long.” My constant desire is to have light and strength to go through this belief of stagnation, of having to sit still, when you want to work. I could not get along without “Christian Science” it is what I do try to live by. I write this letter to you, so that you will know that I am not going back from “Science”Editorial Note: Christian Science, in fact I love it more than ever, and all the ScientistsEditorial Note: Christian Scientists too. I feel hungry to see and speak with some of them. May God’s richest blessing fall upon thee, is the desire of my heart. I don’t want this letter to bother you for you have enough to attend too. But I feel that I must tell you just how I stand. I would gladly go back to Boston, but not if my husband had to go into his father'sAs Written:fathers storeEditorial Note: Colman’s father-in-law, Noah Colman, was a hat merchant.. Give my love to those that love me. Good night dear teacher.

Your loving student
