I have resigned here and will be free January 1st. Before making another engagement I address you in regard to the work in BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts which you mentioned in your letter of August 21stEditorial Note: This letter is not extant. For the last six weeks I have been diligently studying "Science & Health"Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy and I am convinced that your Theology is true. Believing such I can conscientiously remain in identification with the "Christian Brotherhood for I am pledged to Christ only and to no creed. Yet there are many hindrances and "Christian Science" is so far above the general teaching of Christendom, that the churches, - the "Christian Church" included to which I belong - look upon it as the Jewish sects looked upon the teachings and works of Jesus. I have very much improved every-way by my investigations and thirst to see the glorious Truth demonstrated in power. I am determined to follow Christ, glorying in the CrossGal 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. , and denying the lusts of the worldTitus 2:11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Titus 2:12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; . The five points of "Christian Science" will revolutionize the world and plant the banner of the original gospel of Jesus the Christ on the battlefield of a conquered and blessed earth.
You have only to call. me to your aid. I am eager to enter the glorious warfare. I am ready to forsake the vain glory of a false standard. I have already done so at the cost of much popularity. I care for neither money, nor fame, nor worldly advancement. I desire the riches of Life, the freedom of Truth and the joys of Love.
I think I can raise sufficient means to bear my expenses to Boston and while in class. Can you give me work when I am through? My wife is now willing for me to go and like myself wants only to be useful. Knowing that the laborer is worthy of his hireLuke 10:1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Luke 10:2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Luke 10:3 Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Luke 10:4 Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes: and salute no man by the way. Luke 10:5 And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. Luke 10:6 And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. Luke 10:7 And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. Luke 10:8 And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you: Luke 10:9 And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. I seek just a livelihood. I ask nothing of you gratuitously, and would not accept such, save my tuition. Here in a nutshell is the situation. I could wait till next summer, at my own convenience visit Boston and then return here to practice wherever I might be preaching, but I can assure you now, I would not be acceptable. If ministers will make it their aim to preach and practice "Christian Science" they will have to separate themselves, and I do not want to enter the College until I can come out from among the shadows of Babylon. You say Well, why do you not do so irrespective of consequences.? I am not alone. I owe my wife a livelihood as she allows me the right of conscience without objection. Where would be the personal sacrifice on my part to abandon everything around me and lead my wife into privations' which might prejudice her against the Truth? I am ready now if you can give me or aid me in getting work. If not I must go on as I can until such time as I can begin to proclaim fully, on my own responsibility and at my own charges bring chargeable unto no man. If I had the means I should go to Boston, learn the way of the Lord, and then preach and practice, without being burdensome to anyoneAs Written:any one. If I had a trade I would do as Paul did at Corinth.Acts 18:1 After these things Paul departed from Athens, and came to Corinth; Acts 18:2 And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them. Acts 18:3 And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers. Acts 18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.
My church will draught resolutions on the first Sunday in November indorsing and recommending me. If you can give me employment in the ministry I shall make no other, engagement. I have believed not for the works sakeJohn 14:11 Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake. but because of the Truth itself. I have not put myself under treatment for several good reasons. I have no doubt whatever as to the power of "Christian Science" in healing from sickness and sin and ultimately death. It is self-evidentAs Written:self evident. Being under Dr Flower's treatment from January till July I was helped very much but not cured. I know now from "Science and Health"Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy how. If I should go under treatment now it would be claimed that Dr F healed me. I have not touched medicine since I first wrote to you although several times severely tempted. I have suffered less and so also has my wife since we abandoned it last August. When she sees I think she will be a strong scientistEditorial Note: Christian Scientist. Hoping to hear from you soon I am
Yours in Christ -
