My dear Teacher:

Yours of Mar. 11Editorial Note: This letter is not extant.receivedAs Written:recd, some days since - In regard to my allowing patients to use medicine while under Christian ScienceAs Written:C. S. treatment, if Mrs. Larminie (and I am perfectly sure she is your informant) gave you the impression that that is my practice, it is a wholly incorrect one.

I have never allowed it except in one case, in my first practice - and that a case the M. Ds. had pronounced incurable - At first I took her medicinesAs Written:med. all away from her, but her fear was so great, and she grew worse so fast, that rather than lose the case, I told her she might use one half dose of one kind, but she only used that a few days, just till I could get the case well in hand - and has never taken any since, Today she is a well woman, and intends studying in Miss Bartlett's next BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts Class - I did it as a matter of expediency – "suffering it to be so then"Matt 3:13 ¶Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. Matt 3:14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? Matt 3:15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. Matt 3:16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: - and have no doubt I should have lost the case had I not done so - and that one case has done more to establish Christian ScienceAs Written:C. S. in that city than As Written: then all the rest of the work I did, put together – I did tell Mrs. L- I had always been sorry I did not allow a case I took last Fall – to use a little of his medicineAs Written:med. he relied so entirely upon, until I could overcome his fear, as he had been a patient of Dr. Dresser, but I did not, and lost the case, So now I presume he classes Christian ScienceAs Written:C. S. with Dr. D’s method, all nonsense -

In justice to yourself and Miss Bartlett I will say that I never was taught to manage in that way, but always the teaching has been against it - and I am teaching my students against it too - And my practice is also against it - still I knew of your advising Mrs. Hale when she was at the College and had a case of Hernia, not to have the truss removed at first - saying that if it were your own case, you should have it removed at once - but it would not be advisable for her to do so, as she might not have understanding sufficient to carry it - I worked on that principle, and I carried my case-

I have a Class of six, which closes tomorrow, and already they are doing some good work,

They are honest earnest workers, and have drank this Truth in, like famishing ones.

One, the widow of a Baptist Minister, is making a very quick healer - She has a very spiritual nature - All "rise up and call you blessed"Prov 31:28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. -

With much love –
E. E. Cross
