Sept. 19th 1885
I have intended writing you for several days, in regard to a lady I met a few days ago: a former resident of New London, but now living in WashingtonEditorial Note: Washington, D.C.. She is very much interested in "Christian Science" indeed is longing and waiting & know the right way. She is very anxious to start right. She heard of this "Science"Editorial Note: Christian Science in Washington, hearing of some lady there being about to start a class. and tried to see her, I think she was out. at the time, She was summoned here very suddenly, and as she was about to return, she heard through a mutual friend that I could tell her what to do, After being sent for to return, she waited [?] Unclear or illegible for me to be sent for – I told her just what I knew, that you could teach her more than anyone else, and if she could go to BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts it would be much better for her. She would rather do so, if she could, but it would be difficult to leave now. She thought if one of your students was in Washington, she could enter a class there. I told her I would write you, Now if you can only write informing her what is best to do I should be very grateful. I have known her all my life, as a member of the same church, and through friends, of her noble, lovely character.
I cannot bear to think of her enlisting on the wrong side. She is one of the right kind, and would do much good.
Almost the last thing she said to me was, that it seemed as if she only had to extend her hand to grasp this "Truth" but wanted to know the right direction in which to extend the hand. I know she was seeking ,aright, and was in earnest, as she took my booksEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy instead of waiting for others to be sent her. If you would write her a few comforting words of advice; they would be more than a whole volume from anyoneAs Written:any one else, Oh, if I could only say what is in my heart for you. My heart bleeds for you so many times, to see you so little understood. How it must wound your gentle heart to see your students turning away from Truth to the flesh pots of EgyptEx 16:2 And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness: Ex 16:3 And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger. , If they only knew! Wonderful Woman! I say whenever I think of you, The first one- in all these centuries chosen for this work. Strange as it may seem to many, the fact remains, only one since our SaviourEditorial Note: Jesus Christ
And now, my dear Teacher, I wish I could have a line from you, I will only ask for one line, as I know you always have more to do than you ought to have.
I am faithfully and sincerely Yours
