Jan. 1885 –
I have had a longing desire to communicate with you and felt a strong inclination to inform you of the many blessing that have come to me from the rich treasure of your “Science and Health”Editorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. and the slow but sure lifting up out of illness through the earnest instruct. mentality of dear Miss. Brown, but I have hesitated lest I might intrude upon your valuable time, knowing so well the care that must press upon you filling the days all full in this your noble work.
Your booksEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. together with my Bible have been my daily companion and I delight to sit and hear of all your excellent traits from the lips of your faithful Student Miss Brown and hence I cannot feel that you are a stranger – Let this all be my excuse for the earnest desire I have to talk with you through the pen. My case was a most serious complication and I exhausted As Written: exausted all the means and skill that the M.D’s of various professions could suggest to me and even went faithfully to the “Swedish Movement Cure”Editorial Note: The “Swedish Movement Cure,” also known as “Swedish Gymnastics,” was started in the early 1800s by Pehr Henrik Ling. It was part of the “Physical Culture Movement” that spread through Europe, England, and the United States in the nineteenth century and part of the twentieth. It emphasized attaining health through calisthenics and light gymnastics. Seven long, tedious, suffering months until despair had marked me for its victim And growing thoroughly discouraged, I gave myselfAs Written:my-self up to what seemed to be the inevitable and a wail went out of my heart, “Do with thine hand maiden as it seemeth good in thy sight oh! God, and let me know no will but Thine”. All at once a vision of somethingAs Written:some thing very beautiful stood before me with out-stretched hand and a countenance As Written: countinence of the sweetest peace and said to me “Daughter be of good cheer”Matt 9:20 ¶And, behold, a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment: Matt 9:21 For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole. Matt 9:22 But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour. – I was electrified and calmed and the tempest within was stilled – and I was resigned and willing to give up all for Him – Only give me Thy-self was my cry and in the Spirit of Esau I thought “Bless me even me also oh! My Father”Gen 27:38 And Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept. – My Husband came right home from business As Written: busyness the next day having heard of Miss B. and the good work she was doing in the family of a friend and he urged me to see her and receive treatment immediately – I did and am now reaping the benefit of said treatment and advice, though some of the fetters still cling and I am ashamed of them and loathe them and long like an imprisoned bird to inhale freedom – Oh! that we could all be like Paul – throw off the fetters that bind and exclaim exultantly – “I am free born”Acts 22:28 And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born. . How glorious such an arising out of the sham and smoke of personal sense As Written: sence and what glad and thrilling music will be in my heart when I can lay aside the bonds and accept fully that eloquent invitation – “And let him that is athrist come, and whosoever will let him partake of the water of life freely”Rev 22:17 And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. . When such pressing invitations are given to us clothed in such garment, pleading, poetic strains, how can we turn aside preferring rather to seek joy at the fount of materiality – No, I am turning my head away from that unsatisfying source of unreality to the fount of Life and I accept all Thy sweet invitations Thou Prince of peaceIsa 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. and long to lay my tired head in thy out stretched Hand and ignore the shadows and falsities of mortal mind ever more – But I find “When I would do good God is present with me, and the good that I would that I I do not, and the evil that I would not that I do”Rom 7:14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. Rom 7:15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. Rom 7:16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Rom 7:17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. Rom 7:18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. Rom 7:19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Rom 7:20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. Rom 7:21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. Rom 7:22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: Rom 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. Rom 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? Rom 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin. , and shrinking away from these shackles I can cry with David “ Give me thine understanding oh! GodPs 119:34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. and let me walk in Thy StatutesEditorial Note: Psalm 119 contains several verses about the importance of “walking in” or following God’s statutes (laws). – for I hate every false wayPs 119:104 Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. . I am asking, seeking and knocking and longing to enterMatt 7:7 ¶Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: Matt 7:8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. Luke 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Luke 11:10 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. with the grand chamber door of ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science – cannot I lean trustingly and patiently, (I am willing to be ever so patient) upon the promise that follows, given in words of silverPs 12:6 The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. , in frame of gold?
Dear Mrs. Eddy have I not your permission to study As Written: studdy this and to try to do as Solomon bids – “God – wisdom but with all thy getting, get understandingProv 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. - ! and as Thomas A. Kempis says “It is better to have a weak understanding and humility that’s a great treasures of learning with self-conceit”Editorial Note: This quotation is from The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis. – Then will you not help an anxious enquiring child whose heart has no other desire but to “Walk in the green Valleys and beside the still waters”Ps 23:2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. . I desire to consecrate all my thoughts and my life to Him. I desire to crucify the lusts of the flesh and walk in the SpiritGal 5:24 And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. Gal 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. with My King – who has blessed me with rich and priceless treasure and obey and honor and praise Him ever more – With all these human frailties, think you I may even reach that high and coveted good? I will try and if at first I don’t As Written: dont succeed, will try again, and though the time be very far away, yet I will hope on and ever – until I can see the stone rolled away from the SepulchreLuke 24:1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. Luke 24:2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. John 20:1 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. and the veil lifted and Liberty proclaimedII Cor 3:12 Seeing then that we have such hope, we use great plainness of speech: II Cor 3:13 And not as Moses, which put a veil over his face, that the children of Israel could not stedfastly look to the end of that which is abolished: II Cor 3:14 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same veil untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which veil is done away in Christ. II Cor 3:15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the veil is upon their heart. II Cor 3:16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the veil shall be taken away. II Cor 3:17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. .
Now have I done something presuming when I tell you that from your choice booksEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I have learned to treat my family of colds - billious attacks &c – and have just cured my servant of Croup? Am I doing wrong to do this without the teaching and if I can do this, from my own efforts at study As Written: studdy may I not hope to be able to do more with your instruction? I have a sweet home, dear Husband and Babies and if that does not please you may I not receive instruction from you? I can learn your terms from Miss B. & that will be all right –
My whole heart is eagerly, anxiously starving for an understandingAs Written:under standing of this Truth, this ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science, the Principle God, good, Who is above in all, through allEph 4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. and before Whom – “Every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess God”Rom 14:11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. – There are many questions that puzzle me, but I fully accept all, because a part is is proven. Knowing the day will dawn, when we will “see “face to face” and know the reason of all things”I Cor 13:12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. – thereforeAs Written:There-fore I will refrain to ask you these questions lest I intrude upon your valuable moments, and for fear I am already trespassing I will close, though my pen is tingling to talk and ask of this glorious ScienceEditorial Note: Christian Science – It thrills me through and through day and night – and I go to bed praising Him and arise with my heart full of a joyous song – and more – more could I live without – I could feel His nearness and to this Truth I say “I will not let thee go until Thou bless me”Gen 32:24 ¶And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. Gen 32:25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. Gen 32:26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. Gen 32:27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. Gen 32:28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. Gen 32:29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. Gen 32:30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. – My dearest joy now is to take or send patients to Miss B. or other ScientistEditorial Note: Christian Scientist here – that they might also come away sipping the juicy sweetness of that delicious fruit they offer.
