In 1843, the Free Church Baptists bought the Tremont Theatre and renamed it Tremont Temple. It primarily housed religious services, but it also rented space for entertainment and other public events. The building was destroyed by fire three times”in 1852, 1879, and 1893. The current structure opened in 1896 and is today home to Tremont Temple Baptist Church. Mary Baker Eddy spoke at Tremont Temple on several occasions between 1885 and 1899. On March 16, 1885, she addressed 2,500 people for 10 minutes. She was responding to criticism from Rev. A. J. Gordon's letter, read by Rev. Joseph Cook to the audience a few weeks earlier; Gordon's letter condemned Christian Science as spiritualism, pantheism, theosophy, and non-Christian.
