The building was owned by James Trask, a grocer, and was located opposite the Essex County Jail. The Choates lived at 47 St. Peter from about 1874 until 1879. This building was the venue for a class taught by Asa Gilbert Eddy in the spring of 1878, and it hosted a meeting of the Christian Scientist Association on New Year's Day 1879. The building no longer exists, and the site is currently occupied by a Salem Housing Authority building, Philip L. Morency Manor.
