Tabernacle Baptist Church was located at 537 Shawmut Street, at the corner of Shawmut Avenue and Madison Street in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood. The cornerstone was laid on January 22, 1873, and the first service was held on May 4, 1873. Construction was completed at a cost of $36,650, and the dedicatory services were held on October 28, 1875. In order to generate revenue for the Tabernacle Baptist Church, space was rented out to other denominations for services. In November 1878, the Church of Christ (Scientist) began holding services at the Tabernacle on Sunday afternoons at 3:00, with Mary Baker Eddy as preacher. (The Baptist services were held at 10:30 in the morning.) The last Christian Science service at the Tabernacle was in February 1879. By 1882, the building housed the Mount Sinai Congregation. After this, the building housed several different religious organizations including the Disciples of Christ, Mishkan Tefila Congregation, and finally, the Twelfth Baptist Church. The building was demolished in the 1960s as a part of an urban renewal project.
