Stephen Wood (1817-1897) was born in Butternuts, New York, and died in Lost Nation, Iowa. He was a New Church minister who preached in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota. At one time he was professor of mathematics at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He was also the father of John N. Wood, a dry goods merchant, who wrote to Mary Baker Eddy in 1885, inquiring about attending the Massachusetts Metaphysical College.
