L. Bell Witherspoon (1864-1888) was born in Wisconsin and died in Los
Angeles, California. Sometime prior to 1870 she moved with her family to Marshalltown,
Iowa. By 1885 they had moved to Fremont, Nebraska, and by 1888 to Los Angeles. She was a
great, great granddaughter of John Witherspoon, delegate to the Continental Congress and
signatory to the United States Declaration of Independence. In 1886 she was sent a copy
of
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Eugene H.
Greene, a student of Mary Baker Eddy's and a practitioner and teacher of Christian
Science.
