Leland S. Whitney (1864-1890) was born in Putney, Vermont, and died in Chesterfield, New Hampshire. He was a hotel clerk and steward. In the mid-1880s he studied Christian Science with a student of Mary Baker Eddy's. He subsequently began working as a Christian Science practitioner in Boston, Massachusetts, and joined the Church of Christ (Scientist) in Boston on March 21, 1886. He married Abbie E. Whitney (b. Wells) in Boston in 1889.
