Rudolf Weyler (c.1850-1908) was born in Latvia, which was then part of
Russia, and died in Newport, Rhode Island. He was a practicing Orthodox Jew until he was
about 18, when he was baptized and converted to Messianic Judaism. In 1878, he emigrated
to the United States and attended Chicago Theological Seminary and Harvard Divinity
School. While at Harvard he became interested in Christian Science after reading
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. He wrote to Mary
Baker Eddy, asking for information about studying at the Massachusetts Metaphysical
College. His interest in Christian Science was short-lived, and shortly after writing to
Eddy, he left Harvard and moved to New York City. In later life he owned a restaurant in
Newport with his wife, Goldie, where he was also a member of Congregation Jeshuat Israel
at Touro Synagogue.
