Arba N. Waterman (1836-1917) was born in Greensboro, Vermont, and died in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Norwich University in 1853 and was admitted to the bar in Albany, New York, in 1861. In 1862, he entered the army, enlisting in Company G, 100th Illinois Volunteers as a private. He was later promoted to captain of his company and then lieutenant-colonel of the regiment. After serving in the Civil War, he moved to Chicago where he practiced as a lawyer. In 1886, he was elected judge of the circuit court and in 1890 received the appointment of judge of the appellate court. Waterman published articles in the Chicago periodical Mind in Nature: A Popular Journal of Psychical, Medical, and Scientific Information.
