Morrison Remick Waite (1816-1888) was born in Lyme, Connecticut, and died
in Washington, D.C. He was the seventh Chief Justice of the United States, serving on
the Supreme Court from 1874 until 1888. The Judiciary Act of 1869 assigned a Supreme
Court justice to one of the nine judicial circuits. Waite resided in the District of
Massachusetts and was presiding over the Circuit Court of the United States for that
district during the Eddy v. Arens lawsuit in 1883.
