Thomas Van Ness (1859-1931) was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and died in
Boston, Massachusetts. He was a Unitarian minister who was ordained in 1884, a year
after graduating from Harvard Divinity School. After graduation, Van Ness ministered in
San Francisco, Denver, Boston, and Brookline, Massachusetts. In 1886, while living in
Denver, he became interested in Christian Science, ordering copies of
Science of Health with Key to the Scriptures and giving talks on Christian
Science.
