John D. Ussery (1828-1888) was born in North Carolina and died in
Hardeman County, Tennessee. He married Elizabeth Bailey in 1848. Ussery worked as a
farmer and was a slave owner. He was a Civil war veteran who served as a private for the
Confederacy in the 44th Regiment of the North Carolina Infantry. In 1885, he wrote to
Mary Baker Eddy, inquiring about Christian Science treatment through prayer for his
daughter and daughter-in-law.
