Mary L. W. Towle (b. Whelpley) (1826-1898) was born in Plattsburg, New
York, and died in Napa, California. In 1853, in Fall River, Massachusetts, she married
George W. Towle. He was a justice of the peace, a district attorney, and then a judge.
Soon after the couple married, they moved to Napa. Towle's obituary states that she was
a writer, achieving a certain level of local celebrity in Napa. In 1886, she wrote to
Mary Baker Eddy, indicating that she and a couple of other women were reading
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures together. She ordered
two copies for other members of this group, Olive Stevens and Jennie Panton.
