Mary L. W. Towle (b. Whelpley) (1826-1898) was born in Plattsburg, New York, and died in Napa, California. In 1853, in Fall River, Massachusetts, she married George W. Towle. He was a justice of the peace, a district attorney, and then a judge. Soon after the couple married, they moved to Napa. Towle's obituary states that she was a writer, achieving a certain level of local celebrity in Napa. In 1886, she wrote to Mary Baker Eddy, indicating that she and a couple of other women were reading Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures together. She ordered two copies for other members of this group, Olive Stevens and Jennie Panton.
