Samuel A. Tolman (1835-1919) was born in Camden, Maine, and died in
Chicago, Illinois. He moved to Chicago in 1852 and went into the wholesale grocery
business, first with Tolman & Walker and then with John A. Tolman & Co. In 1860
he married Elizabeth "Bessie" A. Tolman (b. Roberts) in Boston, Massachusetts. She was a
student of a student of Mary Baker Eddy's and wrote to Eddy in 1886 inquiring about the
Normal class.
