
Emelyn "Emmie" M. Tobey (1855-1926) was born in New York, New York, and
died in Tamworth, New Hampshire. She grew up as a member of the Congregational Church.
Tobey received Christian Science treatment from Hannah A. Larminie before becoming a
student of Ellen Brown Linscott's in October 1885. She then became a student of Mary
Baker Eddy's, completing the Normal class in October 1887 and the Primary class in
September 1888. She was a principal of the Milwaukee (Wisconsin) Christian Science
Institute from May 1888 to December 1889. Tobey was a member of the Christian Scientist
Association and the National Christian Scientist Association. She was president of the
Students' Christian Scientist Association No. 33, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Tobey joined The
First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 31, 1892. In
1894, she bought a home in Chicago, Illinois, and moved there. She served as clerk of
First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago, Illinois. By 1900, Tobey had moved back to
Wisconsin. She served as First Reader at First Church of Christ, Scientist, Waukesha,
Wisconsin. Tobey was listed in the directory of
The Christian Science
Journal as a Christian Science teacher and practitioner from 1901 until her
death.
