Jeremiah C. Tilton (1818-1872) was born in Franklin, New Hampshire, and
died in Tilton, New Hampshire. He worked as an inventor and manufacturer and married
Emily S. Morrill in Canterbury, New Hampshire, in 1843. Tilton enlisted as a captain
during the Civil War in 1861 and served in the U.S. Volunteers Commissary Department for
the Union. He was appointed postmaster of Tilton for the year of 1871. The town of
Tilton, previously known as Sanbornton Bridge, is named after his great-grandfather,
Nathaniel Tilton.
