Sarah E. Ticknor (b. Smith) (1836-1917) was born in Ohio and died in
Omaha, Nebraska. In 1859, she married Elias W. Ticknor in Morgan, Illinois. He served in
the 27th Regiment of the Illinois Infantry, 1861-1864, and held the rank of First
Sergeant. The couple moved to Omaha, Nebraska, in 1881. By 1900, Ticknor was running a
boarding house and actively involved in the Women's Relief Corps. Ticknor wrote in 1886
that she and her husband wanted to take classes with Mary Baker Eddy, having previously
studied with Janet T. Colman. They took the Primary class in January 1887 and were
registered members of the Christian Scientist Association. Ticknor wrote to Eddy about
the healing work that she was doing, and several letters to Eddy from other writers
mention the Ticknors as active Christian Scientists.
