E. Gertrude Thayer (1854-1915) was born in Ashtabula, Ohio, and died in
Kalamazoo, Michigan. Sometime prior to 1870 she moved to Kalamazoo where she had a
career as a high school teacher. In November 1885 she took a class in Mind Cure from A.
J. Swarts while he was in Kalamazoo on a teaching circuit. Thayer became interested in
Christian Science through a student of a student of Mary Baker Eddy's and in August of
1886 wrote a letter to Eddy to inquire about taking a class from her, but there is no
record that she subsequently did so. She joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist,
in Boston, Massachusetts on June 4, 1904.
