
Charles W. J. Tennant (1871-1944) was born in Cashel, Ireland, and died
in London, England. Tennant joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston,
Massachusetts, on November 5, 1901. He was a member of First Church of Christ,
Scientist, Edinburgh, Scotland, and served as First Reader. In 1913, he took the Normal
class taught by Laura E. Sargent in the Board of Education of The First Church of
Christ, Scientist. Tennant served as District Manager of Committees on Publication for
Great Britain and Ireland from January 1915 to December 1936, when he was appointed
Field Representative of The Mother Church in Great Britain, Ireland, and Europe. He
served as such until December 31, 1938. In 1933, Tennant compiled statements from
multiple individuals on the history of early Christian Science in various places in the
United Kingdom. He also authored an "Early History of the Committee on Publication for
London, England." To meet the emergency arising from the war in Europe in 1940, Tennant
was elected a member of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship to serve in the
British Isles. He retired permanently from this post on June 30, 1943. Tennant was
listed in the directory of
The Christian Science Journal as a
Christian Science practitioner in Caldercruix, Scotland (1903-1905), and as a Christian
Science teacher and practitioner in Edinburgh (1912-1914) and London (1915 until his
passing). He was a member of the Committee on Christian Science Houses (nursing homes)
in England and Wales.
