William Taylor (1834-1884) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and
died in Troy, New York. He trained as a doctor in Philadelphia, and during the Civil
War, he served as an assistant surgeon, first in the 41st Pennsylvania Volunteer
Infantry, and then in the 6th Pennsylvania Heavy Artillery. After the war, he devoted
himself to the study of theology and he was ordained as a Universalist minister in 1868.
Over his career, he ministered in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Troy. At the time of his
passing, he was secretary of the Universalist Convention of the State of New
York.
