Johannes Tauler (c.1330-1361) was a German mystic and Catholic preacher
who belonged to the Dominican Order. He became the leader of the Friends of God, a group
made up of ecclesiastical and lay Catholic mystics. His sermons were first translated
into English in 1857 by Susannah Winkworth, a skilled translator from England. Edward J.
Arens plagiarized Winkworth's translation when publishing his pamphlet,
The Understanding of Christianity, or God (1881).
