Mary L. Swormstedt (b. Lowry) (1839-1910) was born in Mt. Vernon, Indiana, and died in Evansville, Indiana. She was the daughter of William Lowry, a wealthy steamboat captain. In 1861, she married Leroy Swormstedt. He was the manager of Swormstedt's Insurance Agency, and a son, William, later joined him in the business. Swormstedt was an active member of the Trinity Methodist Church and one of the vice presidents of their Ladies' Foreign Missions Society. In 1886 Swormstedt wrote to Mary Baker Eddy to order a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
