Augusta Holmes Swasey (1820-1887) was born in Peterborough, New
Hampshire, and died in Waukegan, Illinois. She was the daughter of Nathaniel Holmes, who
owned a cotton mill in Sanbornton Bridge (now Tilton), New Hampshire. Swasey was a
school friend of Mary Baker Eddy's, both attending Sanbornton Academy. Swasey and Eddy
(Baker at the time) maintained a strong friendship as young adults, corresponding
regularly after Swasey moved to Haverhill, New Hampshire, following her marriage to
Samuel Swasey in November 1842.
