Thomas Swartwout (1825-1917) was born in Johnsburg, New York, and died in
Chicago, Illinois. He had several occupations during his lifetime, including mining
prospector, over sleeves manufacturer, and real estate agent. Swartwout studied
Science and Health and met with Mary Baker Eddy when she visited
Chicago in May 1884. Swartwout received Primary class instruction, possibly from
Bradford Sherman, but there is no record of him studying with Mary Baker Eddy or uniting
with The First Church of Christ, Scientist.
