Matilda B. Stocking (1844-1923) was born in Chautauqua County, New York,
and died in Freeport, Illinois. She married Dr. Charles H. Stocking in 1866. She was
head of the Chicago Orphan Asylum, in Chicago, Illinois, from 1895 to 1917. Her friend,
Sarah C. Porter, wrote to Mary Baker Eddy in 1885, asking for information about the two
of them studying at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College. There is no record of
Stocking studying with Eddy or joining The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston,
Massachusetts.
