R00030 Alice B. Stockham (1833-1912) was born in Cardington, Ohio, and died in
Alhambra, California. She was an author, physician, and suffragist. She trained as a
teacher at Olivet College, Michigan, and after graduation, studied at the Eclectic
Medical Institute (EMI), Cincinnati, Ohio. While attending EMI she met her husband,
Gabriel H. Stockham, marrying him in Chicago in 1856. After marrying, they practiced
together in various places in Indiana, Missouri, and Illinois. In 1882, she obtained her
medical degree from Chicago Homeopathic Medical College, becoming a licensed physician
in Illinois. She is credited with being the fifth female M.D. in the United States. She
was also an advocate for gender equality, birth control, and total abstinence from
alcohol. She authored several books on women's health, including
Tokology (1886) and
Karezza (1896). Although she
expressed interest in Christian Science and the works of Mary Baker Eddy, there is no
record of her studying with Eddy or uniting with the Church of Christ
(Scientist).
