Charlotte J. Smith (b. Bradley) (1840-1918) was born in New Haven,
Connecticut, and died in East Haven, Connecticut. In 1867 she married Sidney B. Smith, a
farmer and market gardener, and they lived in Hamden, Connecticut, moving to East Haven
sometime prior to 1886. Smith was the daughter of Henry I. and Marietta Bradley, the
older sister of Caroline S. Bates (b. Bradley), and the sister-in-law of Edward P.
Bates, all of whom were students of Mary Baker Eddy's. In the mid-1880s Smith was healed
through Christian Science treatment by M. Anna Osgood and in July 1886 took classes in
Christian Science Edward P. Bates and Ellen E. Cross. Osgood and Cross were also
students of Eddy's. Smith was a member of and led services at the Christian Science
church in New Haven in the early 1890s. She joined The First Church of Christ,
Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 30, 1894, and was a practitioner listed in
The Christian Science Journal from 1889 until 1913.
