Frederick A. Small (1846-1912) was born in Maine and died in Blue Island, Illinois. As a child he moved with his family to Iowa, living first in Davenport, then Iowa City, and then Dexter. He served as a private in Company K, 44th Iowa Infantry of the Union Army in the American Civil War. In 1874 he married Lydia M. Small (b. Trimble). They continued living in Dexter, where Small worked as a grain merchant, until the mid-1880s when they moved to Cook County, Illinois, living in Worth and finally in Blue Island. Small was employed by F. G. Kammerer & Company, a grain commission firm in Chicago, Illinois, and was a trader on the Chicago Board of Trade. In 1886 he received Christian Science treatment from May C. Cope.
