Josephine V. Skillin (1867-1932) was born in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and died in South Portland, Maine. She was in an accident when she was 15 years old that resulted in a spinal injury. Sometime during the latter half of 1885 she started receiving Christian Science treatments for at least a year and a half from George W. Chase, who was a student of Mary Baker Eddy. In 1886, she wrote to Eddy to order a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Her mother, Abbie E. Skillin, wrote to Eddy the following year, requesting a subscription to The Christian Science Journal for Josephine.
