Lydia S. Seward (1835-1900) was born in Effingham, New Hampshire, and
died in Malden, Massachusetts. She married Samuel Seward, a carpenter, in 1855. Seward
was a student of Mary Baker Eddy's, completing the Primary (April 1885), Normal (May
1886), and Obstetrics (October 1888) classes. Seward was a member of the Christian
Scientist Association, as well as the National Christian Scientist Association. She
joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 5,
1892. She was listed in the directory of
The Christian Science
Journal as a Christian Science practitioner in 1896, and from 1898 to 1900.
The first Christian Science teacher in Malden, she was also instrumental in forming the
first Christian Scientist Association there. In 1897, Seward helped establish First
Church of Christ, Scientist, in Lynn, Massachusetts, and was elected their First
Reader.
